“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” -Proverbs 9:10
The fear of the Lord is not about being afraid of God but standing in awe of His holiness, majesty, and power. Reverence leads us to wisdom , aligning our hearts with His truth. When we recognize who God is, we begin to see ourselves and the world through His perspective. Wisdom acknowledges that He is the Creator; we are His creation.
PRAY
Holy God, reveal any part of me that does not revere You as You deserve. Forgive me for treating you as common or casual. You are God; I am not. Align my heart with Yours.
REFLECT
How does understanding God’s holiness shape your view of Him?
In what areas of your life do you need His wisdom today?

READ
“‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty; the whole earth is full of His glory’ . . . ‘Woe to me!’ I cried. ‘I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.’” -Isaiah 6:3, 5
Isaiah’s vision of God’s holiness left him in awe and humility. The angels declared God’s holiness three times, emphasizing His unmatched purity and perfection. When we encounter His holiness, it exposes our need for His grace and forgiveness. Yet, His holiness also invites us into deeper intimacy with Him as we strive to live holy lives.
PRAY
God, open my eyes to your Holiness and my need for your grace and forgiveness. Thank you for drawing me close, even when I don’t deserve it.
REFLECT
What does God’s holiness mean to you personally? How can you reflect His holiness in your daily life?

READ
“And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God ask of you but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to Him, to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.” -Deuteronomy 10:12
Loving the Lord draws us close to Him, while fearing the Lord keeps us from straying. In his book, The Awe of God, John Bevere explains that love fosters intimacy with God, while fear ensures we honor His holiness and authority. These two aspects are not contradictory but complementary, like two sides of the same coin. Together, they create a balanced and healthy relationship with God.
PRAY
Father, grow my love for you and increase my awe of you! Let both love and fear keep me close to You and keep me walking in Your ways.
REFLECT
How do love and fear of the Lord work together in your life? Are there areas where you need to grow in either love or reverence for God?
-
READ
“Let all the earth fear the Lord; let all the people of the world revere Him.” -Psalm 33:8
To stand in awe of God is to recognize His power and authority over all creation--including us and every aspect of our lives. True reverence will not be contained to Sunday worship but will permeate every moment of our lives. When we revere God, when we are in awe of Him, His purposes become our purposes and we trust in His plans. As Pastor Stacy reminded us recently, “Fear of the Lord leaves zero room for how WE think things ought to go!”
PRAY
Father, your greatness leaves me awestruck! When I see how You have moved in my life, how Your power is displayed in the world, I am filled with wonder. Thank you, Lord!
REFLECT
What specific aspects of God’s character or creation inspire awe in you? How can you live TODAY in a way that reflects reverence for Him?
-
READ
“God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.” -John 4:24
Worship is not just about singing songs; it’s about honoring God with our whole lives. Reverence in worship means approaching Him with humility and sincerity. The culture today insists we claim our worth. But for those who live in awe of God, recognizing His worth is paramount and giving Him the glory He deserves is an honor. The fear of the Lord allows us to locate our worth in Him!
PRAY
Lord, help me to worship you as you deserve to be worshipped, to give you the honor you are due. Teach me to make everything I do an act of worship. Let my whole life reflect how much I revere You.
REFLECT
How can you cultivate a heart of reverence in your worship today and going forward? What does it mean to worship God in spirit and truth?
-
READ
And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” -Colossians 3:17
Reverence for God is an every day way of life that comes from the heart, not Sunday behavior or performance. When we truly live in reverence, our actions and words point to His power, reflect His glory, and bring Him honor. When we grasp this perspective, it transforms ordinary tasks into acts of worship.
PRAY
God, reveal areas in my life where I’ve withheld reverence for You. I ask for your forgiveness and for your help: Teach me to let reverence for You guide my thoughts, my actions, and my interactions.
REFLECT
What would “every day reverence” look like in your life? What changes can you make to ensure your actions glorify God every day and in every space?
-
READ
“Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” -Ephesians 5:21
The awe of God impacts how we treat others: When we honor Him, we also honor the people He has placed in our lives. This respect fosters humility, kindness, and unity. Jesus taught this lesson in reverse in Matthew 25:40: "Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me." How we treat others reflects the reverence we hold for Him.
PRAY
God, forgive me for not letting the fear of the Lord influence my interactions with others. I pray you would help me see You in the people around me. Show me opportunities to minister to others in a way that honors You and ministers to Your heart. too.
REFLECT
How does reverence for God shape your interactions with others? Who can you serve today out of reverence for Christ and how?

READ
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” -Matthew 6:33
When we live in awe of God, our priorities naturally shift. The temporary pursuits of this world fade in comparison to the eternal value of His kingdom. Jesus reminds us to seek His righteousness above all else, promising that everything we need will follow. Awe reorients our hearts to focus on what truly matters—God’s will and His glory.
PRAY
Lord, help me to evaluate my priorities and align them with Your kingdom. Fill me with awe of You, guiding my decisions and ensuring that You remain at the center of my life.
REFLECT
What areas of your life might need a shift in priorities to align with God’s kingdom? How does seeking God’s kingdom first bring peace and clarity to your life?

READ
“Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for; through the fear of the Lord evil is avoided.” -Proverbs 16:6
The fear of the Lord is a powerful deterrent to sin. When we revere God, we are more aware of His presence and holiness, which motivates us to live righteously. Awe of God doesn’t just convict us of sin; it empowers us to overcome it by relying on His Spirit. Like Peter, whose life was transformed by encountering Christ, we too can experience victory over sin.
PRAY
Holy Spirit, search my heart today. Bring conviction (awareness) to the areas of my life where I need Your help to overcome sin. Empower me to walk in righteousness and honor You in all I do.
REFLECT
How does reverence for God help you resist temptation? In what areas do you need to rely on the Holy Spirit for victory over sin?

“Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here am I. Send me!’” -Isaiah 6:8
When we stand in awe of God, we are compelled to share His greatness with others. Isaiah’s encounter with God’s holiness moved him to respond with willingness and urgency. Living in awe of God fuels our mission to make Him known in a world that desperately needs Him.
PRAY
Lord, give me a heart for Your mission. Help me to be open to Your call, whether it’s sharing the gospel, serving in my community, or discipling others. Use me as a vessel to bring glory to Your name.

Living in awe of God gives us boldness. Peter and John were ordinary men, but their reverence for God transformed them into bold witnesses. When we stand in awe of Him, we are empowered to live courageously and share His truth with others.
